Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam is a testimony to a country's ability to construct monolithic projects in the midst of adverse conditions. Built during the Depression; thousands of men and their families came to Black Canyon to tame the Colorado River. It took less than five years, in a harsh and barren land, to build the largest dam of its time. Now, years later, Hoover Dam still stands as a world-renowned structure. The Dam is a National Historic Landmark and has been rated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders. The dam is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on US Highway 93 at the Nevada-Arizona border.

Lake Mead
Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA) offers a wealth of things to do and places to go year-round. With 1.5 million acres, it is twice the size of Rhode Island. Its huge lakes cater to boaters, swimmers, sunbathers, and fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside sightseers. Three of America's four desert ecosystems--the Mojave, the Great Basin and the Sonoran Deserts--meet in Lake Mead NRA. As a result, this seemingly barren area contains a surprising variety of plants and animals, some of which may be found nowhere else in the world. For Seasons, Hours, and rates check website.
The northern (Nevada) shoreline of Lake Mead can be accessed by taking Lake Mead Boulevard (I-15 exit 45) east from Las Vegas. This changes into Nevada State Highway 147 once you clear town. Then take Nevada State Highway 167 to head towards Valley of Fire State Park.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway
Las Vegas Motor Speedway has the distinction of being the first completely new superspeedway to be built in the southwest region of the United States in more than 20 years. But along with everything else in this glamorous corner of Nevada, growth is a sign of the times. LVMS first hosted a NASCAR event in 1996 -- the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season finale. Jack Sprague rolled to victory in that historic event. A new attendance record for a Nevada athletic event was established the week of Feb. 25-March 1, 1998, when an estimated 250,000 fans converged on Las Vegas Motor Speedway for an extravaganza of auto racing activity.

Red Rock Canyon
Just 10 miles from the city, the mountains rise to a great colorful escarpment, formed along a fault zone with peaks over 8,000 feet, and including huge cliffs and ravines composed of bands of grey, white and red rock, all heavily eroded. The wide empty plains beneath the hills are studded with Joshua trees and other desert plants, contributing to a most impressive spectacle.
